I have been planning for the longest time to adopt a lil one. The thing is, we are not allowed to keep furry ones in our condo...or so they say. Yesterday, I heard a lil furry one bark. That gave me hope! Maybe we could have lil ones with us after all.

Roicy pics are up. Please take a look and see if you can save one of these precious lives. Roicy animals are always wonderful, but, unfortunately, the place is packed with an outstanding group. Unless held over, which a few will be, these animals will have until 5 PM Monday, May 8 to get out with PTS Tuesday morning. I am BEGGING someone to save the mama dog, Bear, and her two pups. She was owner surrendered after Missy took the pics so she is a hold over that nobody knew about. She is photographing much larger, but is only about 35 lbs, shaggy like a Wheaten, but looks like a small version of a Collie mix. Her pups are both boys and adorable. I fear she won't be held again and I love this dog. The dilute Calico female juvenile has been held for the 3rd time. Sadly, her mom went to the bridge Friday. Please, somebody, save this little petite girl. She was so frightened when she came in, but has relaxed a lot. It would be a shame if she did not get out Monday. I try to stay detached, but sometimes it is hard. I was so happy, and surprised to see her still there, but so sad not to see her mama. I also think the orange and white boy has been held once. What a great cat, as is the HUGE gray and white one. The adults really get to me.

Adoptions at Roicy right now are just about non-existent. I have heard that the intake of animals in South LA is up 35% post Katrina, and adoptions are way down. The rescue groups who used to pull can't anymore. So our only hope are those from out of the area who will get in the truck AND JUST COME. You must be a 501(3)(c) to pull, and your info needs to be faxed to Virginia in advance 337-291-7051. This is a rabies control facility, not an adoption facility, so they are not open on the weekends. Every one of these animals deserves to live past Tuesday AM. Please, send an email, make a phone call, make a visit to a your neighborhood shelter, and see if they could make a run down her ASAP. I get tons of emails from individuals out of state who want to adopt or foster. Sadly, this is not a possibility, and Roicy cannot hold animals until you can work out a transport. The best way to help is to support those who support Roicy. The orgs who have been pulling the most animals lately are Acadiana Humane Society for you cat lovers(http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/LA20.html), ARF( http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/LA19.html ) and APAWS( http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/LA12.html ). Sue Rabeaux with the Cat Ranch, although she does not have non profit status, fosters for both AHS and APAWS. Her quarantine area was destroyed in the storm last weekend (http://www.petfinder.org/shelters/LA132.html).

ARNO has stepped up to the plate big-time and is paying all vetting on anything we can get into foster care for at least 60 days. So, what stands in the way of us pulling Monday are foster homes. As it stands now, WE HAVE NONE so there will be no animals pulled. If you can foster for ARNO or another org, please contact Jennifer at whippetdogs@yahoo.com or myself rescuerealtor@cox.net. References WILL be checked, your own animals must be utd on shots, and you must have the ability to isolate for at least 10 days. PLEASE HELP ARNO TO CONTINUE TO FEED ON THE STEETS. I haven't had time to post. I'm swamped with work and deadlines and to top it all, I don't have cable (not a big deal but it's my only source of entertainment...^_^). I can't even squeeze in enough time to update www.friendsnpaws.org. I need to put it up soon and help spread the gospel of people needing to spay, neuter, donate to rescue groups or do the rescuing themselves and adopting from kill shelters. Did I mention spay and neuter and adopting from kill shelters?

It is comforting to know that there are folks who, although there is not enough space in their shelters, will always have room in their hearts for precious souls. ARF, Acadiana Humane, APAWS, Looziana Basset, Cat Ranch and Companion Pet Adoptions and countless others who, though operating on a shoestring budget, have always been there to give the furry friends a second life. Just imagine what wonders they could do if we gave them our full support (or a trickle of the money spent on warfare is diverted to the welfare of furry ones).

Roicy pics are up....please take a look and see if you can help anybody. The cat room is filled with the most gorgeous cats I have seen in awhile. They are just beautiful and sweet. Two come from the same place and are victims of Katrina. I believe the person has relocated to this area and had too many cats for her current living situation so she surrendered them. They are altered, as is the Siamese mix. Their fees will be reduced. Unfortunately, the only two rescues who have been pulling cats lately are full. The dogs are all wonderful. The Heelers and the Beagle are my favs, probably because they have very little chance of being adopted. It is hard to pick a favorite this week, though, because they are all awesome. For many of these, they have ONE day to get adopted or rescued....Monday, March 6. They should keep the pups longer if they stay healthy. Please send this to anybody you know who is a legit 501(3)(c) rescue group able to get here by Monday, or a prospective adoptive home within driving distance. Because they are such a small facility, they are very selective regarding temperament, so you will not find a bad one in the bunch. Rescue can pull anytime, but must be there by 3 PM. Proof of 501(3)(c) status and adoption policies are required in advance faxed to 337-291-7051. The shelter will try and hold over, but the unwanted animals are coming in due to hunting dogs being dumped, puppy/kitty season, etc. They only have 12 dog adoption runs. Unless you have the ability to get in the car and come to the shelter, or have contacts in this area who can do that, please do not call the shelter. They have two new people in the office training, and the volume of calls is unreal. The shelter will not adopt out of state or transport to you. They are a small rabies control facility with very limited staff.

The shelter still needs Kuranda beds. All sizes are needed. Many thanks to those from all over the US and Canada who have sent beds. The dogs love them.

Roicy Duhon Animal Control Center has 16 doggies waiting for that chance to love and be loved. They're a great bunch of lil ones - some even know commands!!! It would be a terrible waste to let them go. Just think of the laughter and comfort you would miss; not to mention the loyalty and friendship they offer. If you want to know how it is to be loved without conditions? Adopt a shelter pet. I kid you not.

Scruffy

Scruffy is a 6-pound yorkshire terrier who was tortured by 4 "human beings" to death. It is beyond me how and where these "people", supposedly endowed with the faculty of reason, could find the capacity to commit such cruelty.

"You're about to witness a murder."

Frankly, I saw nothing of that. I saw 4 beasts preying on an innocent soul. I saw "people" relegating themselves to a species that scums themselves will treat with contempt. Scruffy proved to be a better being than these four.

I am praying that Scruffy's Law pass.

The scared calico pictured from my previous post died today. An illness claimed her.

She was rescued from Roicy by a great group - ARF, making her an honorary dog. Sue, from Cat Ranch, was fostering her. If I were a cat, Sue's ranch is Disneyland and it's the place to be. She was christened Lily.

It's sad to see her go. She blossomed into a sweet girl once she was out of Roicy. It's sad that she spent several of her last days caged in a control facility. But I bet she's happy knowing that a great group of people(led by Debbie) did their best to give her a better life. She was loved. That is what she will remember.

The Eyes of a Child

Fear and abandonment. These eyes convey them best. It's a picture of utter bewilderment, of pain and a plea for forgiveness. It doesn't take much to understand what these lil ones need. A warm hug. A loving family. A friend. A rescue. A prayer.

We are blessed with the ability to lift them out of their cages at this moment and bring the light back into their life and happiness back into their eyes. They are lovely beings and I bet they have lots of love to share and silly, happy memories they would love to make with us. Please bring them home or at least give them a chance to become a part of one. Call your rescue groups and donate to rescue a Roicy lil one now.

A special plea goes out for the kitties that were held over from last week. Their chances are null to negative of making it out of Roicy this week. Please help. You need to be at Roicy before 3PM Jan 26 (Thursday).

We need homes and hearts to reach out and give these lil furry ones a chance to become a part of a family, become a part of someone's life. I am quite fearful of what lies beyond Monday for these lil ones. I post their pictures here and hope that someone out there will be touched and rescue them from the gas chamber. I don't want this post of mine to turn into an 'In Memory of...' post.

Duke...a great journey begins

This is in celebration of Duke's journey to a new forever home in New Jersey. Duke, a mountain cur, was surrendered by his owner over to Roicy. One adorable feature that struck me was the way his forehead creases. An appearance of a wisened lad, I must say.

This is the best reward rescuers could ever have. Thank you Lafayette Animal Aid. Thank you generous Duke sponsors. Thank you sweet lil sweet you who gave Duke toys.

Not a Shelter Kid

It amazes me how beautiful the furry kids at Roicy Duhon's adoption row are. Absolute angels. Just proves that they don't belong to a shelter but belong to homes. They should be a part of a family, a part of a friendship.

They only have until Thursday, January 19. I know someone who is celebrating her birthday on that day. Let it be the birthday of one of these kids into your family. You will not regret it.

Miracle

When one faces a burden, one confronts it and seek for ways to resolve it. Triumphs would be aplenty but there will always be a juncture when there would be nothing but a blank wall and total helplessness - when that time comes we all hope for a miracle.

January 12, 2005 - an amazing rescue happened at Roicy Duhon Animal Control Center. It was a miracle.

19 lil ones were needing rescue with only hours left before that day's deadline. A great group of people (miracle rescuers!) were relentless in their search for rescue groups and pledged donations and rescue funds from their own pockets. They faced one blank wall after another (understandably so...rescue groups are doing the best they can) until such point when all that is left to do is to pray for a miracle.

God did smile down on them and gave them exactly that. Jennifer Beun (marvelous woman!) delivered the miracle and the miracle rescue group was Raven Woods Animal Sanctuary.

I urge benevolent hearts to please support the following rescue groups who rescued the lil ones from Roicy Duhon this week -

Stray lil ones are a common sight in Bangkok and most of those that I have encountered are affable and mischievous ones. They are quite a healthy lot too. I love petting them. It’s the best stress buster.

I don’t really worry a lot about the strays in Thailand. Thais in general are guided by belief not to harm them and I can say most are animal lovers. The King of Thailand (my favorite monarch), for one, persuades his people to give strays homes. This he has done so himself and has published a book about this fortunate lil one.You can read an article about the book here. The book's a great read. A humbling one too. Dogs can teach us tricks after all.

Anyway, since last week, I started carrying with me a pack of doggie and kitty food (yeah, my bag's full). ^_^ So anytime I meet a stray, not only do they get petting from me, they get treats too!!! YEAH! I'm a walking one-stop lil one whatchamacallit!

Black Dogs Down

I had a hard time sleeping last night what with my day ending with several beautiful lil ones being put down. Lucy, the black labrador was held-over, thanks to the efforts of Sandy of One-at-a-Time Rescue, Vancouver and the benevolence of Roicy Duhon's staff (thanks Troy and Virginia!). This is a brief reprieve...a stay of execution, if you will and we really need YOUR HELP in ensuring Lucy's held-over blessings will not come to naught. She won't be held-over forever. This holds true to two other black labs - Smell A Home (Kennel 10), a handsome young lab and Bella (Kennel 3), a beautiful lass. Please, please find it in your hearts to give these lil ones a home.
The new batch of lil ones at Roicy's adoption row includes a mom and her 3 puppies (pictured above). Just the thought of them spending a night in a kill shelter pains me and believe me, if I were anywhere near Louisiana, I would have opened my home to them. They will make great friends. Great buddies. You folks in the US are lucky to have a better chance of having them. So why wait? Please call Roicy Duhon Animal Control Center and let them know you are willing to adopt this family.

Lucy - a sweet, pleasant labrador retriever was surrendered by her family to Roicy Duhon Animal Control Center. She has a disfigured right front leg that looks to have been a break that has healed. She does not favor it but it is crooked.

Can you give this girl a loving home and give her your warm love and attention? Black Labs in high kill shelters don't have the best adoption rate because they often go unnoticed. Factor in Lucy's imperfection and what do you think her chances are? Please do not allow Lucy to become just another one of those who never got a second chance. Come on over to the shelter and give her a home or support your rescue groups so they can pull her out of Roicy Duhon. She only has until Thursday, December 8 5PM...that's not too far off.

Petfinder Notes: These pups were brought to the shelter by their owners. They are barely eating solid food. Pups this age are at very high risk due to the fact that their immune systems are not developed. The cold cement floor is a far cry from the warmth of mom. These pups need to be rescued or adopted at once, because this is not a safe place for them. Please come down to the shelter right away and save these lives.

I'm thinking of a new fundraiser for the rescue of our furry friends at Roicy Duhon Animal Control. This would be a more constant source of funds, if it turns out well. My Dollar for a Life Campaign is still moving and I'll be updating my list soon. I hope I give a rescue group a significant amount for Christmas. ^_^

Most of the Roicy Animal Control Center kids spent Thanksgiving in their cages, still with an uncertain future. We would like to thank the families who opened their homes to some of them and we are asking for people who are looking for lil furry ones to adopt...give the kids at Roicy Duhon a look.

New Life

Tell me how it feels to have no one to lean on when you needed help the most. Imagine the fear of uncertainty, the pain of betrayal and the anguish of abandonment. We, though, are armed with faculties to help us fight and survive. These babies are not blessed with that choice though. They were surrendered to an ugly fate…and are caged and can do nothing more but await a savior. Do they even understand the predicament they were forced into? Does this give credence to the worn-out line 'Ignorance is bliss"?

When these cage doors open next week...let them be doors opening to a new home...a new life...we are blessed with the gift of choice...let one of our choices this Thanskgiving week be to grant a precious, innocent baby a gift of life.

Joey's Road Ahead

Joey left Sue's fold yesterday. I'm happy that she has finally found a new home where she can roam free but at the same time, sad that she had to leave Sue's Cat Ranch. I knew she was happy there...it's great watching her pictures through Sue's moblog.

Just look at her...such a sweet lil darling. I'm actually thinking of having her flown here...but first, I need to move to a place where they would allow me to keep her. Ridiculous really...this 'No Pets Allowed' rule. I reckon the chances of my ruining the furniture would be greater than Joey. I'm as clumsy as clumsy gets.

This incredible cat was brought in by its owner with his litter box, litter, food, toys, wearing a beautiful collar and ID tag. Please save this boy and be a loving owner he can count on and give him the wonderful life he deserves. To make sure that he is safe, please do not delay and come to the shelter right away. The shelter would love to hold this cat over indefinitely, but there are always cats coming in and the shelter is very small. They just do not have the room for everybody.

Even though he looks similar to his cage mate, they are not related. Even so, they were sleeping curled up with each other for comfort. They are small, sweet little guys who love being together and love to be held. This little man would be a fantastic companion for an older person looking for a lap dog. Please do not delay in getting to the shelter to meet this little guy. The shelter is crowded, and many of the unwanted hunting dogs are coming in. To be sure that he is safe, come to the shelter before Monday, Nov. 14 at 5. The shelter staff would love to hold over, but that depends on space.

PETFINDER NOTES - KENNEL 4: These are beautiful Lab mix sisters about 5 months old. Someone came in with them and said they were dropped in his yard. The just love each other and are playful and friendly. They should grow up to be beautiful girls....if they get the chance. If you like the looks and smarts of a Lab, but would rather a smaller version, these girls should be perfect. Unfortunately, there are TONS of Labs and Lab mixes coming into the shelter all of the time. Due to hunters dropping off dogs who would not hunt, stray hold is full of them awaiting their turn at adoption row. Black dogs in shelters have low adoption rates because they often go unnoticed. Please come in and save the lives of these two girls. You may be the only one to notice them....so don't think that someone else will come. To be safe, come to the shelter before 5 PM on Monday, Nov 14. The shelter would love to hold them over, but that depends on space and the shelter is crowded most of the time.

PETFINDER NOTES - KENNEL 8: This poor dog's name is Little D....guess it stands for little dog dumped because he was turned into the shelter by his owner. So, understandably, Little D is very confused. His world has suddenly been turned upside down and he finds himself in very scary surroundings. The heartbreaking thing is he sits at the front of his cage wanting more than anything for his owner to come and get him. The owner surrenders are really heartbreaking...and my heart belongs to the black Labs because they are a fantastic breed with low adoption rates in Southern shelters... especially now. Hunters are turning in dogs that failed to hunt...usually just dropping them in the overnight kennel at night. Please come down to the shelter before 5 PM on Monday, Nov 14 to make sure that this dog is safe. He is only about 7 months old! The shelter can hold over, but stray hold is full of dogs awaiting their turn to go to adoption...and many of those are black Labs. Don't breed or buy while others die...save a life.

PETFINDER NOTES - KENNEL 11: This very sweet boy appears to be under a yr old...shelter has 7 months. This dog was found running the roads looking for a good time. He is still very playful, and would make a great playmate for kids or other animals. This dog has the great misfortune of being in the second to last kennel. Often people coming in to look at the dogs don't even make it that far. Also, black dogs are overlooked much of the time....so the only one who might notice this sweet boy is you. To make sure that this dog is safe, please come to the shelter before 5 PM on Monday, Nov. 14. The shelter tries to hold over, but there are many Labs in stray hold right now awaiting their turn to go to adoption. It always depends on space. There are just so many Labs and not enough homes for them.

She loves attention and is super sweet and playful. She would be a treasured companion for a little boy or girl. She is also a beautiful color. If you like the looks and intelligence of a Lab, but are searching for a smaller dog, this is a great choice for you. Please do not delay in coming down to the shelter right away. She is just a little baby and has not received her shots or developed immunity to illness, so needs out quickly. Also, this is a really busy time at the shelter and they are very crowded. The shelter would like to hold over but that depends on space. Don't take a chance with this precious life.

PETFINDER NOTES - Well....just look at her face because it says it all. She is very scared and unsure of her surroundings. She is a little shy, but warms up quickly. She is also a very gentle dog so would be good with kids. Labs are known for their intelligence and are often used as service dogs. Their desire to please lends itself well to obedience training. She will be capable of learning anything you take the time to teach her. Black dogs in high kill shelters in the South have low adoption rates...especially Labs. There are tons of them, especially at this time of the year due to hunters dumping them. Please come to the shelter before 5 PM on Monday, Nov. 14 to make sure that she is safe. The shelter will try and hold over, but that depends on space.

Beagles for You

The first beagle pictured above (Too Curious) was found in a ditch, so don't know if she went in search of some interesting scents or got dumped off somewhere because she did not hunt.....She has a mild cherry eye, so it may scare people off but should not. Cherry eye sometimes occurs in Beagles. It is a prolapsed third eyelid and often can be repaired under local anaestesia or may be treated by topicals. Please consider saving this dog's life...her chances will be reduced by people assuming it is something really bad.

The second beagle (Abadoned) is a beautiful tri-colored Beagle who was dropped in the holding pen outside one night. Such a shame...he is a really sweet dog. Many hunting dogs are being abandoned right now because they don't hunt. Not sure if that is why he is here...maybe his family just got tired of him. Well, at least the person did not abandon him in the woods. Please come to the shelter right away to make sure that he is safe. The shelter can hold over if there is space, but the shelter has been very, very crowded, and there will be many Beagles and Labs in stray hold.

Tabbies tend to be very affectionate and these two are no exception. Unfortunately, tabbies are common so often get passed over for the fancier cats. What would you prefer...a gorgeous cat who ignores you, or a wonderful cat to warm your lap this winter???? Save the life of a wonderful tabby kitty...but hurry....the shelter is crowded and time is limited. The shelter will try and hold over, but there are an unusual number of kittens at Roicy right now and these two might get left behind.

What an incredibly awesome and beautiful cat! This cat is very laid back...and is unaware of the danger she is in. She loves attention and just rolls over on her back to have a belly rub. Unfortunately, as with dogs, black cats get left behind more often than not....especially in a room full of kittens. Please notice this beautiful girl and give her the home she deserves. New furry friends' pictures have been posted and they have until 5 PM Thursday, Nov 10. They could be held over, but it is very doubtful and we are not counting on that chance. It is as crowded as kitten and puppy season...may be hurricane related. These are absolutely beautiful animals and local rescues have no room. Please get the word out. Several were put down this morning because we had nowhere for them to go.

Operation: Best Friends

Okay folks...time to get our resources together and help 6 special furry Roicy friends reach Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Some of the kitties have already been tested FIV/FeLV positive...and one of them is Maggie, the pretty tabby pictured above (and she sure knows how to strike a pose!) .

So what's the next best thing we could do? Give them our greatest care, love and support!!!

We already have a benevolent supporter who has gifted us with his frequent flyer miles to get one caretaker to BF. Each of our furry friends will need funding to get to Best Friends....it's doable folks!!! Let's get Maggie and the other kitties to Best Friends!!!

Update on Roicy pets

I checked Roicy Duhon's listing of pets and the tabby I wanted to save isn't there anymore. He may have been gassed or adopted. I prefer not knowing...I just pray that he is comfortable and happy. I would have given him a great home, if I were in the US of A.

There are three kittens listed on their site now (one of them pictured on the right). I appeal to the rescue groups to please go get them. Please. Please.
